All about Skiing in Montriond

Skiing is a very popular winter sport that involves the thrill of being able to move swiftly down a hill. It is a sport that requires a good coverage of snow to be in place so it can only be done in the winter months on real snow. The popular ski resorts around Montriond have systems in place that help to make snow so the ski season can continue even when there isnt sufficient snow fall being provided by nature.

While it is easier to learn how to ski when you are young, it is a sport you can take up later in life. The more flexible that your body is the easier it will be for you to learn how to ski. It is a good idea to take the time to enroll in classes with a ski instructorfrom the ESF or other approved ski school. This way you dont develop bad habits that you will simply have to break later on.

It is going to take plenty of practice for you to be able to master the basic skills of skiing. Dont give up though because as you continue to improve your skills you will enjoy this winter sport more and more. Skiing is great fun and it is an excellent form of exercise due to the amount of muscles in your body that it works.

The Montriond ski slopes are accessed by taking a bubble lift from Ardent to the Lindarets plateau and then selecting a futher lift towards Avoriaz, Linga or to the Swiss border. The you select the groomed run you want to go down. Each one is marked based on the steepness and the level of difficulty. You should never go down ski slopes that are too advanced for your level of skills. You will be putting yourself and others at risk of injuries or death. Always stay on the market trails and pay attention to other skiers in the area. Most accidents that happen on ski slopes are the result of individuals not following the rules.

To ensure you stay warm while skiing you will need to dress in layers. This way you can take them off as you get warmer and put them back on when the temperature drops and the wind picks up. Ski suits will help to retain your body temperature and you will want to wear gloves and a hat. Ski goggles or sunglasses will help to protect your eyes from the glare of the sun and any debris. You also want to wear a pair of quality ski boots for support and control.

For those with advanced skiing skills, the slopes may not offer enough of an adventure or thrill anymore. Other great options are to try out cross country skiing or Telemarking.

Most resorts in the Portes du Soleil region will have a selection of marked and prepared trails for cross country skiing enthusiasts - check the ski resort websites for details and maps (find them via the ski portal at www.snowpages.com).

If skiing away from the groomed runs it is a good idea to always have at least one other person with you and to let others know where you are at and when you will be returning. Stay safe!
